A Good Time to Gear Up for a Job Search

If you've given up looking for a job, the change of season is a good time to shift your perspective and take a new approach.
It's also a good time to upgrade skills by engaging in training or education that will help expand your employment opportunities. You might want to sign up for a workshop at Career Link. If you are a youth, consider attending JobFest when it arrives in Powell River on October 19 (www.jobfest2012.ca). Check Vancouver Island University's course and program offerings. And, from 1 to 2:30 pm on October 16, Career Link and VIU are hosting a free lunch and information session about Women in Trades.
If it has been awhile since you last conducted a job search, refresh your skills by searching "job interview tips" at Youtube and watching some videos. You can practise your technique alone or with a friend to increase your level of comfort when talking about yourself and your background.
Fall is also a good time to check out the latest fashion reports and perhaps invest in a new hairstyle or a new outfit so your appearance looks fresh and up-to-date for job interviews. Consulting your hairstylist and local clothing store owner is a quick way to get helpful advice. The old adage that "first impressions count" is never truer than in a job interview.
Updating your resume is an obvious step toward getting the job you want. And in today's social media-savvy world, updating your social media presence goes hand in hand with preparing an effective resume (see "Social Media Blur," the August 30 Water Cooler blog). There are plenty of resources to help you with your resume and job search, including Career Link's Self-Help Services and Employment Counselling. Online resources abound. Google the phrase, "resume templates," and find examples of both resumes and cover letters that you can use.
The job seeker who has the best mix of qualifications, interviewing skills, and rapport with the interviewer is the most likely to be successful. Perseverance is necessary. There is no way to know how long a job hunt will take, but it could take months. Your persistence should pay off in the end.
