Find Out What Your Gifts Are

By Maureen Latta

Do you wake up Monday morning with a sinking feeling in your gut? Do you check the clock every five minutes as the end of your workday approaches? Do you come home exhausted and irritable? Do you look in the mirror and think, "What am I doing with my life?"

If you answer yes to most of these questions, you might be suffering from a syndrome called "I Hate my Job."

The most common causes of this syndrome are as follows:
Sometimes, feelings of dissatisfaction with your job indicate you should start looking for a new one. But often the cause of the dissatisfaction can be dealt with - without having to ditch what might be a very valuable job experience.

Take problems with coworkers, for example. Interpersonal challenges have a funny way of following us wherever we go. That disrespectful coworker named Bob might show up in your next job-but with a different face and name. Instead of groaning about how you hate your job because of Bob, you could say, "Maybe I need to develop some skills for setting healthy boundaries." You can practise on Bob! The awful job becomes a way to grow and learn important life lessons that you can use throughout your life, in many situations.

Consider the problem of heavy stress at work. Boundary setting can help here, too. Maybe you need to tell your employer that your workload is getting out of hand and suggest ways to improve the situation. Or maybe your perception that your work is stressful is due to the fact that you've been neglecting your overall health. Lack of exercise, nutrition, and quiet time can significantly reduce your ability to handle stressors, thus making a normal workday seem like too much to handle. The good news is that, as you put a high priority on your health needs, you should notice a rise in energy levels and positive feelings.

Boredom might mean it's time to ask to be assigned more interesting tasks. Find out if there are any training opportunities that would allow you to take on more challenging roles.

Lack of meaning is not as easy to identify as some of the other causes of work dissatisfaction. If you feel your work is unimportant and that you are wasting your life, you should take this feeling seriously. Everyone has gifts they can bring into the world to make a difference. It's time to find out what your gifts are and be courageous enough to start using them.
