Have you ever had to work on Christmas Day?

Who could forget one of the funniest-ever Christmas movie scenes? Will Ferrell as the excitable elf in Elf practically implodes with joy at the thought of working in a department store at Christmas time.

Doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, ambulance drivers and care home workers often have to work the Christmas shift or at least be on call. And let's be grateful for that. Accidents and illnesses don't respect the holidays. Neither do fires. If your house caught fire at Christmas time, you'd be thankful that firefighters are on call every single day. Crime happens, cars and boats malfunction, news breaks - that's why police, coastguards, tow truck drivers, dispatchers and journalists often have to forgo the comforts of a tinselled tree.

The best way to beat the Christmas blues is to show the true spirit of Christmas regardless of where you are on Christmas Day. If you show the spirit of Christmas, you are sure to feel it yourself.

Here are a few suggestions:

• Make or purchase some small gifts you can give to your customers and co-workers on Christmas Day.
• Plan a potluck with your coworkers and show up wearing an elf hat, a cheesy Christmas sweater or anything else that makes you feel silly and happy.
• Have a special gift delivered to loved ones while you work. You will feel happy just imagining their surprise.
• Come to work prepared with the best lines from Christmas movies to test your co-workers' knowledge. Be sure to give candy rewards for correct guesses. Here's a start: “Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings."(Did you guess, It's a Wonderful Life?)
• Enjoy an intimate Christmas celebration with loved ones on the day before or the day after Christmas. You don't have to celebrate Christmas on December 25th.
• If you are an employer, leave cards or small gifts for each of your employees to show your appreciation for the fact that they are working for you on the holidays.
