Stand Out In The Talent Pool

Has applying for a job become more difficult or easier with technology? Once upon a time, not too long ago, it was possible to enter a place of business and apply for a job. This straightforward application could take many forms. It could be as simple as a conversation or as difficult as tossing together a resume and dropping it off. Although there are still some employers that depend on that key first impression, technology has dramatically changed the way we do business and no more so than in the recruiting industry.
With web-enabled systems, candidates can now apply for a job with a click of a button, and managers can assess talent pools almost instantly. An applicant tracking system (ATS), also called a candidate management system, is a software application designed to help a business recruit employees more efficiently. An ATS can be used to post job openings on a corporate web site or job board, screen resumes, and generate interview requests to potential candidates by e-mail. It is estimated that roughly 50 percent of all mid-sized companies and almost all large corporations use some type of applicant tracking system. Benefits of an applicant tracking system for employers:
- sourcing large volumes of qualified candidates,
- tightly managing the flow of candidates through the pipeline,
- streamlining interactions between recruiters and hiring managers, or
- creating a consistent and compelling brand experience for candidates.
First of all, an ATS that is user friendly can be a great experience for the job seeker. By registering first, the candidate can apply for multiple positions without having to complete the registration process over again when they return. The system can be a little cumbersome even for the tech savvy; consequently I would suggest starting the task with the expectation of investing some time while anticipating a few speed bumps.
Knowing a few tips could assist with your progression:
- When you click on that ‘Apply Now’ on a job board (workopolis.com, monster.ca, and corporate web sites) be aware that you will be leaving that site and moving on into the ATS.
- The registration process is not you applying for the position; you are just completing the registration.
- Make sure that you are noticing the * (asterisks) and be certain you fill in the information that has the * (asterisks) the first time round or you will be directed back to do that later at the end: when you thought you were finished!
- ATS’s are designed to pick out key characteristics from the cover letter and resume you upload: the nearer your documents match the job description, the closer you are to being recognized as right for that position
- The majority of the top applicant tracking systems have a knock-out system. These ATS’s will ask you 4-5 questions right before you begin to actually apply or at the end of your application. These questions are designed to screen out any candidates that are definitely not who the company wants to hire for that position. Some examples would be; are you available to work all shifts including early mornings and weekends; are you legally able to work in Canada?; do you enjoy working as a team player; Are you able to work in a high energy environment and remain on your feet for a full 8 hrs; etc. If you get knocked out for one position, you will still be able to apply for other positions that may or may not have different screening questions.
Answering the screening questions as truthfully as possible is best for both you and the potential employer for an ideal employment experience: which is the ultimate goal and benefit to the job seeker. Studies have shown that companies save a significant amount of money on employee turnover costs (the dollars to hire, train and replace) by hiring more efficiently. This cost-saving could translate to more benefits for an employee. The dollars saved on turnover could go into retention practices; those things employers do to hang on to the great employees they have invested in.
So while web-based job applications may seem a little daunting and time-consuming at the beginning, it is worth the time and effort for job-seekers as it opens up a whole new world of employment opportunity. There is help available at Career Link if the prospect of applying on-line seems too scary. With a little help, you’ll feel more confident in this brave new world and wonder why you ever hesitated, particularly when you get that great job!
